5 of Wands

In the Five of Wands, a new spear has replaced the lush bouquets of the Four. The card has shed the decorative and superficial embellishments no longer needed for pursuing its passions. The floral fineries of cushioned comfort have given way to the central wand, which embodies a new creative ideal. The previous achievements, synthesized in the side wands, now serve as the canvas on which the fifth wand rises both as a perspective and as a cutting line. The graphic simplicity of the Five of Wands is a necessary prerequisite. In numerology, the number 5 represents change. Odd and active, it must be viewed in the apparent discomfort of imbalance and risk-taking. The central staff inevitably creates tension in the quadrilateral structure. And at its breaking point, the Five of Wands contemplates only two options: "it either works... or it breaks!" Amidst the multicolored sticks, two lovers share a moment of intimacy. To combine the useful with the pleasant, the game mistress might be writing a poem, a philosophical essay, or a legal article. Or she might be more prosaically fulfilling an ancestral marital duty. If the man were indeed attending to "his small business," the first spark would set off a firestorm, transforming this tiny matter into a blaze or a pyre... of vanities. According to "Oban yoko-e," Isoda Koryusai (1735 - 1790)

The Five of Wands expresses the temptations and challenges inherent in passions and the creative realm. This card indicates that our creativity is ready to explore new horizons. Our curiosity and taste for experimentation are receptive to any new stimulus. Simultaneously, the Five of Wands creates a breach in our routines that disrupts the balance of our comfort zone. It can evoke competition, struggles for influence, and obstacles that arise when conflicting or competing aspirations are at play. In its positive aspects, the Five of Wands encourages us to step out of our comfort zones to unleash our latent creative potential. Its invigorating energy literally stimulates our entire being. It signals a period favorable for exploration and development, providing a reservoir of energy to explore new sensations and alternative techniques. In any case, the Five of Wands prompts us to find a balance between deepening eros, healthy competition, and beneficial collaboration. Conversely, this card may suggest resistance to novelty and an excessive attachment to regressive or involutionary routines. The Five of Wands can also indicate pathological deviations or toxic mechanisms in the pursuit of pleasure and stimulation of creativity. Finally, its egocentric tendencies are also a frequent cause of excessive tension and harmful rivalry. In the context of a reading, the Five of Wands invites us to be aware of the stakes related to our hedonistic habits and our desire for transcendence. Specifically, it urges us to evaluate whether our passions are aligned with positive developmental intentions or if they are driven by narcissistic desires and ego struggles. It warns against the temptation to confuse the unknown with the incongruous. The former, when pursued with awareness, is a source of spiritual growth... while the latter, if it is merely a perverse quest for power and pleasure, inevitably leads to the corruption of souls.
