5 of Cups

With the Five of Cups, the climbing plant spreads in all directions. The vertical and elongated stem has now blossomed into a turgid bouquet. With a bit of imagination, it now resembles a yogi, satrap, or dervish. Its harmonious, often hypnotic twists have an Oriental flair, and the figure it inspires... prays, sits, or dances. The odd cup occupies the center as if it were the belly, or the navel, of the card. Beneath its bulge, two corollas spread downward, forming an open heart, seemingly generous. The flowers create the illusion of a benevolent and penetrating gaze while the yellow branches encircle the base of the chalice and form its nose. From their junction, a floral mass descends, with each part recalling a chakra, all pointing towards the root. From the central dome, a vegetal column emerges. And as its branches burst to the north, east, and west, it awakens as a spiritualized creature whose headdress resembles a tiara... Perhaps that of the Pope. At the bottom of the illustration, a black angel spreads its wings in a humble and cordial manner. Facing him, a young devout woman appears to offer her heart without a trace of hesitation. Beneath her joined hands, the abdomen is generous and swollen. Is it round from her nascent piety or the profane deeds of the visitor? Based on "The Annunciation," Fra Angelico (1395 - 1455)

The Five of Cups explores emotional or affective idealization and the transformations of the heart... as well as its temptations and deviations. In this sense, this card covers aspects as contradictory as enthusiasm, commitment, exaltation, illusion, disappointment, loss, and acceptance within emotional and relational realms. The Five of Cups also confronts us with moments when our expectations and experiences diverge. It reminds us that we often take our desires for realities. This card calls us to view our emotional impulses with greater detachment. It suggests surrounding our attractions and rejections with the same emotional temperance to avoid pitfalls. The Five of Cups is an invitation to recognize the seasons of the heart with a sharper awareness of the variability of our emotions. The same passion leads us to either fall in love with a person or cause... and then to reject it. Our lives are marked by false prophets and greener pastures. And when we succumb to the whims of our emotions, sooner or later, initial enthusiasm gives way to regret or desolation. In the context of loss, the Five of Cups encourages us to look at what is still available to us. With it, mourning transforms into a transitional space heralding renewal and emotional growth. It is therefore an invitation to acceptance, emotional healing, and the reorientation of our energies towards positive experiences.
