4 of Cups

The organic plant structure of the Four of Cups is more complex and intricate than that of the previous card. The lower cups seem isolated from their upper counterparts. Two large dark blue and orange petals separate the four chalices, as if each pair suggests a distinct emotional project. The broad leaves are directed upwards, clearly supporting the upper cups. From the central root, three flowers grow successively into a bouquet whose exuberance diminishes as it ascends. The initial purple and gold fade gradually into the nuanced blues of day or night. In this Four of Cups, the passion of the beginning transforms into a spirit that maturity invites to reflection. The fire of initial emotions transmutes into lucid... yet cold and calculating thoughts. In the lower half of the card, the same petals now resemble the ears of a fox, whose bright red eyes are the ovals of the cups and whose snout, extended with a yellow nose, pulls a small tongue in a grimace. On either side, a pair of seahorses turns its back on each other, yet their tails are intertwined. They appear so distant and yet so close at the same time. The cup they embrace with an inseparable grip may be the foundation of a sincere and lasting love... or is it its shroud?

The Four of Cups introduces a rigid and fixed structure into the spherical and fluid space of emotions. While it signifies security and stability in relationships, it also highlights potential materialistic and security-driven deviations of the heart. The Four of Cups may indicate that we are blind to the true intentions behind our relational choices while neglecting our deeper emotional needs. Regardless, this card invites us to assess our emotions and reflect on our romantic journey. It suggests a period of withdrawal, where we can question whether our emotions and relationships align with our desires. Sometimes, the Four of Cups suggests a period of questioning and emotional fatigue. It signals that we might feel disenchanted or dissatisfied. In this case, its advice is to seek inner clarity to understand what truly resonates with our heart. Finally, in the context of a reading, it may also point to an opportunity that we do not immediately perceive, advising us to take the time to consider all perspectives. Proper introspection can lead to more informed choices and a more authentic emotional connection with ourselves and others.
