3 of Cups

The beauty of the Marseille tarot attributed to Nicolas Conver (1784 - 1833) lies in the simplicity of its graphic style. The naive, even primitive character of his illustrations is particularly expressed in the suit of the minor arcana. The organic representations require, at first glance, an insider's knowledge to decipher the symbols and understand their meanings. However, the curious and playful eye will sometimes discern a totem and other times a tribal mask in the convolutions of branches, stems, leaves, and flowers that fill most of the space on the minor arcana cards. With a bit of perspective, the Three of Cups depicts two intertwined open hearts... or the face of a faun, perhaps a satyr, with its mouth open and tongue sticking out, which one might imagine as benevolent. Moving upwards, the yellow lateral stems split into three branches, the lower parts of which blossom into poppy bulbs. The central stems, in red, form the ears... and at the top, the blue-orange petals seem to imitate horns. In this light, how could one not attribute a Dionysian connotation to the Three of Cups? Finally, the hands added to the original design hold up the cups as if to toast. Borrowed from Anglo-Saxon representations of the Three of Cups, they further emphasize the joyful and festive echo that this card resonates with. Cheers!
