Page of Cups

In tarot, the Page of Cups is the counterpart to the Page of Hearts. In the French version of playing cards, his name is La Hire. La Hire was the nickname of Étienne de Vignolles, a companion-in-arms of Joan of Arc. Famous for his military deeds... and his excesses, this medieval captain may have earned his nickname from a fiery and quarrelsome temperament. In any case, the Page of Cups embodies the spirited young nobleman. Cheerful and full of energy, this gentleman is undoubtedly in courtship mode. On his golden hair, a bouquet as a crown reveals the "blue flower" side of his nature. In his right hand, he holds an oversized cup and in the left... the lid or a rugby ball? In any case, this ambiguity contains all the paradox of a character who can be both delicate and blunt. Finally, like the cloak that replaces the cup's clasp, his attire may drape him with excessive modesty. But his shyness, potentially maladaptive, can turn into bitter and sharp nastiness. Sometimes, from a symbol of virility and harmlessness, the dagger he wears across his shoulder becomes a knife: beastly, aggressive, and cruel. From "Étienne de Vignolles alias La Hire," Louis-Félix Amiel (1802 - 1864)
