The Judgement

The 20th card, Judgment, marks the beginning of the third and final cycle. Like the figure seen from behind, it represents that third entity which is either adored or abhorred. It is the unique and perfect being born from the union of duality. Literally, Judgment is the child born from the lovers' act of love and reverence. It is also the one who is both revered and condemned, with equal versatility. Figuratively, and like the blue creature the angel calls forth, Judgment is an appeal to transcendence. It represents memory, survival, and becoming all at once. Moreover, it embodies the vocation that only the humble can hear, because it professes the very essence of the word forgiveness. For it, any desire for transcendence necessarily involves the irrevocable abandonment of all grievances: a permanent renunciation of nurturing resentment and seeking revenge. By elevating to the realm of the spirit, Judgment attains the trinity. Its winning triad: feminine, masculine, and divine. It is thus earth, sea, and sky... all at once. So, aware of the triple integrity of its nature, it is pure truth. Based on "The Last Judgment" and "Portrait of a Lady", Rogier van der Weyden (circa 1399 - 1464)

When it appears in a reading, the Judgment card signifies the imminence of a new consciousness. And the event that accompanies it often takes the form of a birth or rebirth... literally or figuratively. In its literal sense, this card refers to our judgments, hasty or peremptory conclusions, our intrigues, and our social condemnations. Judgment reminds us of the splinters we easily see in our neighbors' eyes while a beam obstructs our own. We are quick to criticize and readily exclude those who displease us for one reason or another. And when we practice self-criticism, it sometimes echoes the harshness of an inquisition. We are often unforgiving toward ourselves, imposing severe penalties. In all scenarios, the Judgment card is a call to truth. What the angel whispers in our ear is an apocalypse in the etymological sense: revelation. And this revelation manifests as an irresistible desire to leave a mark... to accomplish immediately what we have deferred for too long. Thus, the project in question finds its realization in transmission. For some, this means starting a family; for others, it involves creating a work—be it humanitarian, artistic, social, commercial, political, or generally societal. Its tagline: "If it is not of divine nature, the judge lies."
