9 of Cups — Tikkoun Tarot de Marseille

The 9 is dedicated to the critical space. After the Eight of Cups, this card invites us to empty our contaminated or impure waters in favor of those that abundantly replenish us.

For the first time since the emergence of the Ace, the organic mass of the Nine of Cups is withering. Perhaps the plant has given everything it could, and the time has come for it to decompose and nourish the earth with its sediments... and to be reborn for a new cycle. But in this case, the Nine also suggests that we reflect on the wine in our cups.

The Nine of Cups then confronts us with a dual view of the spirit: has our emotional life blossomed like the bouquet on the right... or does it resemble the dried and wilted flowers on the left side of the card?

Interpretation

The Nine of Cups is a tipping point between emotional fulfillment and the salutary mourning of what no longer serves us.

In its positive form, the Nine of Cups embodies emotional and relational completeness. It suggests that our deepest aspirations are realized in a feeling of joy and universal love. In this perspective, the Nine of Cups represents pure altruism and detachment. It invites us to let go completely of what still harms us, to share spontaneously, and to celebrate the simple joys of life. With this card, there are no covetousness or jealousy... The heart simply rejoices.

Conversely, its negative aspect reflects our fears and emotional deficiencies. In this case, the Nine of Cups may indicate the refusal to abandon a toxic relationship or to mourn corrupted and harmful feelings. This card then draws our attention to the detrimental attachments we refuse to sever.

In the context of a reading, the Nine of Cups signifies the end... or the beginning of an emotional cycle. Depending on the circumstances, it may mean relational flourishing or the need to separate from something... or someone. In this case, it encourages us to resolve our latent emotional and relational conflicts to welcome renewal... with a heart lightened and freed from the weight of our constraints.
